Thank you to everyone who donated to our 2023 diaper drive! Your support helped unhoused women have access to free diapers and wipes through the Homeless Prenatal Program (HPP). We call that a big win. Learn more about HPP and how your donation helped mamas in need below.

An estimated 1 in 5 homeless pregnant women give birth prematurely (double the national rate), posing both immediate and lifelong health challenges for the newborn. Homeless pregnant women are also less likely to seek prenatal care, increasing risks for perinatal health issues affecting both baby and mother, and they are more likely to face life-threatening complications that need medical intervention.

These are mothers like you who want desperately to protect their babies and give them what they need to thrive. Housing is essential for pregnant and postpartum women, and the Homeless Prenatal Program provides a safe space for San Francisco mothers in need at the Jelani House. The Jelani House operates with public funds from the City of San Francisco, but in order to supply residents with maternity and newborn essentials, they need additional funding from the community. Our diaper drive has ended for the year but you can still donate funds to HPP year-round on their website. Any amount helps!

A special thank you to our 2023 diaper drive partners!

ABOUT THE HOMELESS PRENATAL PROGRAM & JELANI HOUSE:

Homeless Prenatal Program seeks to break the cycle of family homelessness and poverty by addressing an unmet public health need – prenatal care for women who are pregnant and homeless.

HPP is a nationally-recognized family resource center in San Francisco that empowers homeless and low-income families, particularly mothers motivated by pregnancy and parenthood, to find within themselves the strength and confidence they need to transform their lives. A small passionate organization, founded by Martha Ryan in 1989, went from serving 72 women the first year to 30 years later, helping 3,500 families in the Bay Area. Today, they have evolved into a comprehensive Family Resource Center, providing a full-range of services to young families and homeless women, with the belief that pregnancy is often a window of opportunity for families to work toward health, stability, and self-sufficiency.

After a multi-year planning process, The Jelani House, located in the Bayview District, is now finally open. Jelani House is a transitional housing shelter for pregnant women and postpartum women, providing 24-hour support, as well as assistance with permanent housing.
